Valiant Comics’ ‘Faith’ Superhero Movie in Development at Sony

Sony Pictures is developing a movie version of “Faith,” based on the Valiant Comics series of the same name with Neal Moritz, Toby Jaffe and Dan Mintz attached to produce for Sony Pictures.

The studio has hired “Escape Room” writer Maria Melnik to write the script. The “Faith” comics are centered on Faith Herbert, a geeky teen obsessed with comics and science fiction, in addition to having the power of flight and telekinesis. Created by writer Jim Shooter and David Lapham, she is a member of the Harbinger Renegades and first appeared in 1992.

Sony and Valiant began collaborating in 2015 on developing a “Bloodshot” movie, based on the Valiant character. The studio signed Toby Kebbell this week to star opposite Vin Diesel in that project with shooting starting in July.

American Gods Writer to Pen Script for Film Based on Valiant Comics’ Faith

Sony Pictures has decided to move forward with plans to adapt Valiant Comics’ Faith for the big screen. The studio has enlisted American Gods writer Maria Melnik to pen the screenplay for the adaptation. Melnik is credited with writing eight episodes for Starz’s television adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novel, as well as additional writing work on the network’s Counterpart and Black Sails series.

Faith Herbert is a member of Valiant Comics’ Harbinger Renegades team, a group of superheroes who fight against the corrupt Harbinger Foundation and its sinister leader. Faith has the power to fly, as well as create forcefields that can shield allies and manipulate objects. She is notably one of the few active overweight superheroes in comics.

This is not the first time Sony Pictures and Valiant Comics have teamed up to bring the latter’s characters to the big screen. The two are also working on a film based on the Bloodshot comic book series. Bloodshot will star Vin Diesel as the titular hero, alongside Baby Driver’s Eiza Gonzalez and Outlander’s Toby Kebbell and Sam Heughan. A film centered around the Harbinger Renegades themselves is also said to be in the works.

Faith received her own series in 2016 from writer Jody Houser and artists Francis Portela and Marguerite Sauvage.

Sony Adapting Valiant Comic Book 'Faith' as a Movie

Sony is developing a feature adaption of Valiant Entertainment's Faith.

The comic book follows an aspiring geeky teen Faith Herbert who is obsessed with comics and sci-fi, and also happens to be a telekinetic superhero. Up-and-coming writer Maria Melnik has been tapped to pen the superhero feature that will be produced by Neal Moritz and Dan Mintz.

Melnik's credits include American Gods and upcoming action thriller The Escape Room, which hails from Sony and Moritz' Original Film. She is repped by WME and LINK.

Faith is the latest superhero development for the studio. News broke Wednesday that Jared Leto would be leading Morbius, an part of Sony's expanding Spider-Man universe of movies.
