Robert Rodriguez Sued Because Sin City Sequel Went Over Budget
Robert Rodriguez is being sued for causing production delays during the filming of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.
The sequel to 2005’s Sin City came out nine years after the release of the first film. Both films are adaptations of Frank Miller’s black-and-white noir comics of the same name. Sin City made over $156 million at the box office, while Sin City: A Dame to Kill For only earned $39.4 million. The sequel was also derided critically, which didn’t help prospects for a planned Sin City universe of films.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For producer Segei Bespalov is suing director Robert Rodriguez for failures behind the scenes that allegedly ballooned the cost of the film. According to Deadline, the filing alleges a “pattern of misbehavior” on the fault of Rodrigues. It accuses the director of causing various delays on the set of the film, which added $20 million in cost overruns. One of the production companies involved with the film, SC2, argues that they “should not have to shoulder the costs of Rodriguez’s false representations, failure to perform and many egregious breaches of various contracts related to the film.”
The suit also levies accusations that Rodriguez allegedly failed to secure a deferred service agreement with a special effects company that would actually be able to work on this production for under $10 million. Rodriguez has not yet released a statement.
