Hasbro CEO Says Power Rangers ‘Undervalued,’ More Movies on the Way
Hasbro chairman and CEO Brian Goldner has made it clear that, following the $522 million purchase of Saban, plans are very much afoot to fix the “undervalued” Power Rangers brand, and this does include more movies.
He made the statement at the Hasbro Strategic Decisions Conference, although he didn’t confirm if new movies would continue the story started in the Lionsgate-produced reboot from 2017, or if a totally new reboot is in the works.
“As I mentioned, we’ve now announced the acquisition of Power Rangers. This is really a great statement about where we believe we are in developing our brand blueprint,” Goldner said. “The fact that we can acquire Power Rangers brand and plug and play that right into our strategy where we activate it in entertainment, motion pictures in the future and then of course across toys and games and consumer products and do so globally.”
“We felt the brand was very under leveraged and undervalued. We feel we can exploit it to a much greater extent and it was a great opportunity to acquire the brand,” he added.
Debuting in 1993 as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the children’s action-adventure series has spawned 19 television sequels, three live-action films and enough toys and merchandise to generate billions of dollars in sales. However, last year’s live-action reboot earned just $142.3 million from an estimated $100 million production budget.
This raised serious doubts about a sequel, although fans and critics took a liking to the film. The direction for the new movies could very well change now, given that Hasbro has its own movie production label and a partnership with Paramount Pictures that has produced Transformers, G.I. Joe, Ouija, My Little Pony and Battleship films, with Micronauts and Dungeons & Dragons on the horizon.
